Stop the Random Acts of Marketing (HYBRID Marketing)

This blog is one post in a series on HYBRID Marketing.  Read on to learn more.

I hear the same two lines from business owners all the time.

“Digital ads don’t work for our industry.”

“We tried branded merch once, and nobody cared.”

And almost every time, when I dig in, here’s what actually happened: they boosted one $50 post for four days. Or they handed out the cheapest item they could find at a trade show table with zero strategy behind it. The tools weren’t broken. The approach was.

I talk about this in this week’s Delivering Marketing Joy 1 on 1 — watch it here, then keep reading, because I want to walk through why this happens and what to do about it.

Naming the villain

There’s a pattern I see over and over, and it comes in two versions.

The first is the well-intentioned version. You sit down, you build a real plan. Then Monday happens — someone needs a flyer by Friday, the CEO has a new idea, there’s an event in three weeks that nobody’s promoted yet. The plan you built quietly dies under the weight of the reactive week.

The second is the no-plan version. Boost a post. Send an email blast. Order pens for the trade show because you always do. Run ads for two weeks and pull the budget the second nothing happens overnight. Everything gets tried a little, and everything gets abandoned before it ever had a real chance to work.

I call this Random Acts of Marketing. It’s not one bad decision — it’s a pattern. And it’s the quiet reason so many good businesses feel invisible to the exact customers who need them most.

Five signs you’re doing it too

Here’s a quick, honest self-check. If more than one or two of these sound familiar, you’re not alone — but it’s worth naming:

  • You’ve tried three-plus marketing channels this year and dropped every one within weeks.
  • Your message changes depending on who’s talking about your business that day.
  • Your digital presence and your physical presence tell two completely different stories.
  • Marketing decisions get made by whatever feels urgent this week, not by a plan.
  • You’ve said “that doesn’t work for our industry” about something you only tried once.

What it actually costs you

A few years back I worked with a childcare company. Great people. Genuinely excellent at the work they did every day. But their message was scattered, and their digital presence didn’t match what you’d experience walking through their front door.

Here’s the line that’s stuck with me ever since: when your marketing is scattered, the people who need you most can’t find you.

That’s not just a revenue problem. It’s a mission problem. Somewhere out there is a family, a customer, a client who needs exactly what you offer — and scattered marketing is the reason they never find you.

The fix, in one idea

I’m not going to give away the whole framework here — that’s what the book and the Scorecard are for. But here’s the core of it: one marketing channel, executed well, can absolutely work. But it’s almost always thinner than it looks. There are gaps you don’t see until later, until a customer falls through one.

The businesses that are winning right now aren’t spending more money than everyone else. They’ve simply stopped choosing between digital and physical marketing, and started treating them as one connected strategy instead of two separate bets.  They are doing what we call HYBRID Marketing.

Think of it like painting a wall with one coat. It might look fine from a few feet back. But get closer, and you’ll see exactly where the coverage runs thin.

One move to make this week

Here’s something practical you can do today, no framework required: pull up your last 90 days of marketing activity. For everything you did, ask one question — did this connect to anything else, or was it random?

Then pick one digital move and one physical move you’re already doing, and commit to connecting them on purpose for the next 90 days before you judge either one.

See where you actually stand

If you want to know exactly where your own marketing is scattered and where it’s already working as one system, take the free HYBRID Marketing Scorecard. It takes just a few minutes, and it’ll show you precisely where to focus first.

No more guessing. No more random acts. Let’s build something that actually compounds.
