In last week’s Delivering Marketing Joy, Episode 100, Seth Godin observed that it is important to comprehend the differences between Mentors and Heroes.
In this video, Seth Godin encouraged everyone to check out his short blog on the subject of Heroes and Mentors. After understanding and separating the aspects of the two, Seth pointed out that it is key to have a certain amount of both in life. Everyone needs to have strong mentors and heroes, as each one holds specific purpose in the development of growing individuals.
Mentors are individuals that are interested in a person and their abilities. With this interest comes the insight to lead and mold someone into a more accomplished person.
Heroes work the other way around. Instead of a hero choosing a person, the person instead decides who they admire. This allows the admirer to observe this individual and pick out certain aspects that they want to mirror.
Many people end up with different Heroes as they grow and mature. Many times we focus on people who have chosen the same path. Others chose Heroes that may have ended up where we hope to someday be. Whatever the reason, these heroes are chosen because of a specific attribute that communicates through their lives and actions.
It might be an interesting idea to examine the Heroes in your own life, in order to see what drew you toward them. This could be a great way to illuminate certain things that motivate or interest you.
Once you have determined what heroes are in your life, pick them apart. Find things that can help you in your walk to success. This might be the road map you need!
