In last week’s Delivering Marketing Joy, Episode 100, Seth Godin observed that it is important to comprehend the differences between Mentors and Heroes.
In this video, Seth Godin encouraged everyone to check out his short blog on the subject of Heroes and Mentors. After understanding and separating the aspects of the two, Seth pointed out that it is key to have a certain amount of both in life. Everyone needs to have strong mentors and heroes, as each one holds specific purpose in the development of growing individuals.
Mentors are individuals that are interested in a person and their abilities. With this interest comes the insight to lead and mold someone into a more accomplished person.
Heroes work the other way around. Instead of a hero choosing a person, the person instead decides who they admire. This allows the admirer to observe this individual and pick out certain aspects that they want to mirror.

Many people end up with different Heroes as they grow and mature. Many times we focus on people who have chosen the same path. Others chose Heroes that may have ended up where we hope to someday be. Whatever the reason, these heroes are chosen because of a specific attribute that communicates through their lives and actions.
It might be an interesting idea to examine the Heroes in your own life, in order to see what drew you toward them. This could be a great way to illuminate certain things that motivate or interest you.
Once you have determined what heroes are in your life, pick them apart. Find things that can help you in your walk to success. This might be the road map you need!

Seth Godin was kind enough to join us in an earlier in Delivering Marketing Joy, episode 100! Kirby and Seth Godin discussed ways to make your company the rational choice among many.
Seth states the truth, without sugar coating it, of why you need to stand out. In this economy you are never going to get more than your share; you can’t just charge a premium that someone will be willing to pay with no questions asked. These days people have Google and are able to look up exactly how much they should be paying you. To ask them for more will make them go to someone else who isn’t.
For your company to be able to charge higher amounts, you have to be able to offer products and services that no one else can provide. This is making your company the irrational decision. I think this word should be “rational”
If you can’t stand out from your competition, then focus on investing even more into creating connections with clients. Take that time to build trust. A business should be doing these two things regardless. If you can’t make yourself the rational choice, then focusing your energies into connections and trust is vital.

Although you might feel like your company blends in with the competition, building trust can help you stand out! Having a great past work history with clients can be extremely rewarding. They will remember that you gave them what they needed, when they needed it. Although this may not seem like much of an edge, you will most likely be their first choice the next time around.
Why would they want to move to an unproven company when they know they can rely on you?

In last week’s Delivering Marketing Joy, Episode 100, Seth Godin made some insightful comments about differentiating. People constantly want to set themselves and their business apart from others, which allows them to create noticeable value for their company. Hasseman Marketing have decided to add this clip of the video to answer your questions!
Seth Godin encouraged business owners to closely examine what they want out of their company as well as how they view their business. Mr. Godin stated, “You’re only a commodity if you want to be a commodity.” If you are coming from the standpoint of you defining yourself by your competition. This will make you differentiate accordingly.

Using other methods to help illuminate your surroundings will allow a clear perspective of your situation. Looking at the world an altered viewpoint will allow you to find what sets you apart. According to Seth, you can do this by asking a specific question “What does that person need, and what can I provide that only I can provide?”
Seth Godin makes sure to add a warning to this thought process. You need to first decide if you want to leave the commodity market; many people enjoy working within this area and might not wish to give it up. In this case, it is up to you to state “I am in a commodity business.” If this is true, then make sure you stay a commodity business. Pick a lane, don’t change sides, decide and commit.

In last week’s Delivering Marketing Joy, Episode 100, Kirby asked Seth Godin why he gives so much of his time teaching others in the industry. Mr. Godin pointed out how different people performing above and beyond their required duties will lead to a better world. He stated, “We all want to live in a society that pays it forward.” But the question to all of us is, how mush do we actually contribute? We might want the world to be a better place, but who wants to take the time out of their busy schedules to make a difference? We all should try to do something to improve people’s lives, and what better place to start than our area of expertise?
If people are divided and secretive within their own industry, then how will there be growth in these economies? The growth will be much slower because helpful knowledge is withheld. Because of this, Mr. Godin pointed out that if the individuals within an industry are divided against one another, then people cannot grow. People need to build the industry together, so you can help by sharing your expertise. This allows us all to achieve higher goals! We have all been there, the new guy in the industry; starting from scratch and barely knowing anything. Hopefully, people were there to guide you as you took your first steps! Even just learning an unknown skill can change someone’s profitability. We hope this blog was helpful to you, and we also encourage you to check out the entire video, as well as the great man himself at: http://www.sethgodin.com Want to keep up all the time?
