If you have been paying attention to our communication lately, you might have seen the conversation around a new program called Better Business University. We are extremely excited about the new platform. And while you might have heard about it, many people still have questions! We get that. So in this blog, we wanted to address the top 5 questions we are getting about Better Business University.
What is Better Business University?
Better Business University is an online platform of business education that is real-world-based and very affordable. We will have a yearly subscription and give people complete access to all classes. The classes are video-based, so you can watch at your pace and on your schedule. As we add more classes…no more cost. Our goal is to reach 10,000 entrepreneurs, leaders, and sales pros to help them elevate their game.
Why Is Hasseman Marketing Involved?
At Hasseman Marketing, we have always been about helping other organizations grow. That might mean assisting you with a marketing campaign, or helping guide our prospects and clients to grow personally. That is why we spend so much time and energy creating content! We feel that Better Business University is the perfect next step to help our prospects and customers level up!
What Courses are Available?
As of this writing, there are 5 robust video courses. The courses available now include:
The Give First Economy
How To Get More Done
Create a Website That Works
How to Market like a Rock Star (on social media and through content)
Build Your Brand with Branded Merchandise
We will be adding more courses soon, and there will be no additional fee for subscribers on the platform.
Who Is Better Business University For?
We are calling Better Business University the “Entrepreneur’s MBA.” We have created the program for entrepreneurs, leaders, freelancers, sales pros, and anyone else interested in leveling up their skills and their career.
What is the Cost?
The goal of BBU is to help 10,000 entrepreneurs and leaders level up. In order to do that, we have made it very affordable. The yearly subscription will be only $249 for the entire year…and you will have access to all classes. As we add more courses, there will be no additional cost! We think that is an incredible value. But during our launch week (May 3-7) we will have a special offer that is even better.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, leaders have been trying to find a way to communicate the steps to take to slow the spread of the virus. As we all know, in March, most of the country shut down in order to “flatten the curve.” That worked to slow the spread, but it shut down the economy as well. Now that we are nearing the end of 2020, the predicted ramp up of cases is upon us…and leaders all over the country (and the world) are working to slow down the spread.
That goal is what led Ohio Governor Mike DeWine to meet with local officials in Coshocton County via Zoom. He implored our local leaders to get creative and do what they can to help communicate the message that we need to be safe. After the meeting, officials from the City of Coshocton and Coshocton Regional Medical Center reached to us to help spread the word. We discussed creating a video, including many local officials, entrepreneurs and healthcare leaders to send a unified message to our community. The theme became simple.
We need to “Step up…and Mask up!”
The work on that script and video began immediately and I am proud of what we created. But it was important to us to create something that sustains the message after the initial bump. So rather than just create a video, we worked to create a campaign. Next up, we reached out to government officials to step up as well. We sent out script (that I will include below) and the first person who recorded his version of the video was Ohio Governor Mike DeWine. He applauded the efforts of Coshocton County and encouraged everyone to “Step up…and Mask Up!”
Excited about this participation, we worked to keep the momentum going. We will continue to share the message from leaders and government officials, but we also wanted to add something tangible to the mix. So what better way to encourage people to “mask up” than to provide masks with the message? We agree. The design was created (as you see in the video) and the masks are ordered and are on their way. In addition, we have created re-positionable stickers that are being printed and will be given to businesses that want to promote the message.
We are excited about the positive momentum that has been created so far…and are happy to use our powers for good. So how can we keep this momentum going? Here are a couple of ideas. First, if you are in our area and you want to participate, let us know. While we think these items will go quickly, we can try to get you a sticker and a few masks to help spread the word. We know that some people find this message divisive (I don’t get that and I talk about it here), but we feel it’s the right thing to do.
If you are not in our area, maybe you can create a campaign like ours in your community. In the interest of helping, here is the script we created that you can modify and use.
Step Up…Mask Up Script
In Coshocton County, we are proud.
We take care of one another, and look out for our neighbors.
We believe in supporting small businesses.
And we celebrate our heroes in healthcare.
We are kind…and we are proud to give back.
That is why we want to urge you to “mask up.”
Wearing a mask is not a weakness…it’s kindness. Mask up.
Wash your hands. Keep your distance. And mask up.
Step up…and Mask up.
(Multiple Leaders on screen). Step up and Mask Up
Let’s all do our part. Be kind. Support small business. Help keep each other safe.
That is who we are Coshocton County.
Let’s step up…and mask up.
Special thanks to our local leaders for not only wanting to do what’s right…but stepping up and working together to make it happen.
Here’s to keeping each other safe. Step Up. Mask Up.
I pride myself on creating content. At Hasseman Marketing, we create podcasts, videos and blogs, and if you are ready this, you probably know this. In addition to enjoying the process, this content drives traffic to our website. That’s all good, right?
Well this week, Eric Dingler did an SEO audit of our website and found something interesting. (Yes we not only do website design, but can provide this sort of service for your website too. Learn more here). You see, some of my blogs are marketing related. These posts are specific to our field of expertise. I might talk about helping your team maintain culture and productivity with a “Work From Home Kit” or we might give you 10 tips on creating better video. These blogs not only help to drive traffic, but they improve our SEO score.
On the other hand, some of the content I write has more of a Personal Development feel. These blog posts are designed to help you (and me) be more productive, chase goals and be more happy. While these blogs are popular (and hopefully helpful), Eric’s assessment of our newly designed site tells us that they “confuse google” as to what Hasseman Marketing does! Well that’s no good!
Would You Be Willing To Change Your Marketing?
The lesson here is simple. It has been well documented that we are living in new and different times. But are you taking a fresh look at your marketing tactics? Just because one path you got you and your business here, does not mean it’s the best tactic to continue today. Are you willing to take a long hard look?
For years, using trade shows and other in person events has been a great way to go to market. But in 2020, that strategy is a tough on to implement. Have you considered Replacing Your Events with Branded Merchandise? This is the right time to have that conversation.
As for me, I am going to work to change too. It doesn’t mean I will stop writing blog posts on why we need to stop being so angry! I enjoy that style of post. It helps me and I hope it helps you too. But I will direct them to KirbyHasseman.com. That is a site I created to promote my books and speaking (yes you can hire me to speak). I will begin posting new blogs there very soon. I am even planning to move some of my older blogs over there too. This seems strange to me, but I am willing to do it if it helps me create better marketing for Hasseman Marketing.
So what are you willing to change in your marketing? It might be time to take a look. And when you are ready, we are here to help.
I was asked recently to present a webinar on creating better video. The idea is, with this time of crisis, many of us are taking the time to learn new marketing techniques. So here are my 10 Tips For Creating Better Video. (And yes you can watch the VIDEO of this here).
Video is huge…and growing. It’s a great way to tell the story of your business. Here is a great statistic to consider. People remember 20% of what they hear.30% of what they see.70% of what they hear AND see!
Zoom calls and have shown us the power…and some possible pitfalls of video. So here is Top 10 List of Tips!
10 Tips For Better Video
1.Lighting Matters:We have seen the zoom call where you are backlit by a window. You are invisible.Consider lighting before you shoot.
2.Consider a Mic: Or at least work on good clear audio.Nothing is more distracting than bad audio…and it will keep people from watching the video…and getting your message.
3.Use a tripod.: Or do your best to keep the video steady. These are all just basics so you don’t lose people before they get your message at all!
4.Think Different Angles: What does this shot look like from a low angle?High angle? My former lead of video was 6 7.I always knew when he shot a video…because it was from his height. Some shots can look TOTALLY different from another angle.Put the camera on the ground. Or consider taking the next shot from a higher perspective. That’s why people love Drone footage.
5.Do An Extra Take! You think you have it…but you might not.Dogs might have barked.Emails dinged.Whatever.Do it one more time. You will thank me.
6.Don’t use Equipment as an excuse. For most of you…your phone is a GREAT way to start. As a matter of fact, I still use my phone a lot.The best camera is the one you have on you…and I have my phone all of the time.
7.Spend time on the Message.Spend time before you start to roll the video thinking about what you want to say.Create a script or outline or bullets. We think we can just “wing it” and the video ends of looking like we are winging it!
8.Create videos with your customers in mind.Answer their questions.Educate them. It’s not just about you.
9.Shared Platforms are powerful.Delivering Marketing Joy is great because I get to interview people that make me smarter…they help the audience…AND it gives you and them a bigger audience.
10.It’s not what you can create. It’s what you can re-create. Consistency is so important.Dollar Shave club is the exception. You don’t create one video and then you are famous. You have to show up again and again.Create something you can create again and again…think that way from the beginning.!
Delivering Marketing Joy is one of the pieces of content that I am most proud. Why? Probably because it was one of the first consistent pieces I produced…and it helped put me on the map.
Now, nearly 250 episodes later, it’s still rolling. As you might expect from a journey like this, I have learned a lot from Delivering Marketing Joy. But what can it teach you? Here are a few lessons I am proud to share.
Don’t Listen To The Voice: I have talked about this before here, but it’s worth mentioning again. The hardest voice to overcome when starting something like this is the one in your own head. For Delivering Marketing Joy, I had to overcome the voice telling me that no one wanted to talk to me on an interview show. Who was I? I am so glad I pushed through that. Most people were more than willing (and generous) to spend the time.
Share Platforms: One of the reasons I think the show worked (early on) was because I was sharing platforms with other people in the industry as I grew my own. In my first episode I talked with Mark Graham. He was already an influencer in the industry, so I was able to leverage his audience too! Obviously, the goal is to provide value. So by sharing platforms you get to share the goods with more people.
Stay With It: When I was about 20 or so episodes into the show, I was kind of tired. I was proud of how many shows I had done…but I did not know whether it was worth it to continue. Insert Seth Godin. I got the chance to interview him (with Mark Graham) and Seth mentioned that he had seen the show! Wow! Then he said something I will never forget. “Stick with it. In 3 years you will be glad you did.” At the time I did not have the next episode lined up! But I did keep it up. And Seth even agreed to be my guest when I got to Episode 100. Watch that here.
Be Consistent: This is something I preach a lot…because I think it really matters. If you want to build an audience (and I am still working on it), you need to be consistent. It’s important to the audience. But I think it’s important to you too. It sets a deadline. Otherwise, it becomes really easy to “just miss one.”
Start With A Few in the Bank: This leads nicely to Start with a few “in the bank.” When I started DMJ, I heard that the average web show never makes it to Episode 5. I have no idea if that was true. But I was obsessed with starting with 5 shows done! That bank of episodes gave me some confidence and gave me time to get more going!
Don’t Worry About the Metrics (at first): It’s not about creating a “viral video.” It’s about creating value. Way too many people get really focused on the numbers too early on. It’s a recipe for frustration. You are (likely) not going to have a big audience at first…so the numbers are not going to be impressive. That’s fine. It will build. Plus, I have found that despite the numbers, you never know who is watching. Keep focusing on the value…the numbers will take care of themselves. Delivering Marketing Joy is a weekly class for me. I learn something all the time. But these are just a few lessons that I am reminded of as I look back.

Happy Thanksgiving! The holidays are officially upon us. And as the Black Friday Sales start (on Thursday, no less) it is extremely easy to get sucked into the stress of the holiday season. We can get too focused on the gifts and less on the meaning. We get focused on the tasks on the to-do list and less on the point of the exercise. I know I am guilty of it. So on this day of Thanksgiving, I wanted to take just a moment to outline a few of the things I am thankful for here at Hasseman Marketing.
The Team
I really am excited and thankful for the team I get to work with every day. From different backgrounds and different parts of the country, the inside employees and the outside sales team are what make us go. They are who “Deliver Marketing Joy.” Thanks to the Hasseman Marketing Team!
Our Customers
Nothing happens until there is a sale. That is true of any business, and certainly ours. We so appreciate the faith and trust our customers place in us every day. Thanks to each and every one of you!
Our Communities
Our Corporate headquarters is in Coshocton, Ohio and we love that area. We #ChooseCoshocton. We are proud of it. We want to have an impact. But with the nature of our business, we have team members in other communities too. Yes, we have people in Ohio. But we also represent communities in Virginia, North Carolina, and California as well. We are thankful for the opportunity to make a difference in each.
Our Suppliers and Partners
As with most any business, we are not in it alone. We have a host of fantastic suppliers and partners that help us do what we do. These suppliers are manufacturers, printers, designers and software developers…and more. We are thankful for the opportunity to work with each. So thank you! If you are reading this, you are likely in one of these camps.
All of us at Hasseman Marketing would like to take this chance to give Thanksgiving…for you!
